You can support the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians’ efforts to become federally recognized by telling lawmakers why federal recognition is important. While the tribe is recognized by the state, that recognition comes with limited benefits. Only federal acknowledgement unlocks the tribe’s ability to maintain government-to-government relationships, access federal programs and resources such as Indian Health Services, housing and child welfare assistance, and college scholarships.
Contact your legislator and tell them why federal recognition is important for the Grand River Bands and Michigan.
Grand River Bands, city of Grand Rapids seeking feedback
The city of Grand Rapids has partnered with the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians to get public feedback on how best to center local indigenous art and history into a future public art project along the riverfront at Sixth Street Park and Canal Park.
You can share your thoughts, ideas and feedback on this project in an online survey.
